Foundation Artist Masks Romero Bust in Reminder to “Stay Healthy”

Earlier this week, and in a move to remind everyone to mask up and stay healthy, George A. Romero Foundation (GARF) artist-in-residence Christian Stavrakis redecorated his bust of the renowned filmmaker with a custom “Stay Healthy” mask, courtesy of PA costume designer Char Wilson. Reflective of George’s own innate ability to tap into the fears of any era, his iconic motto “Stay Scared!” was updated to reflect the very strange circumstances we are currently living in.

“Most of George Romero’s films deal not with monsters, but with people and their behaviors in a crisis,” says Stavrakis. “We’re living in very ‘Romero-esque’ times, and a mask seemed appropriate. He’s smiling behind his mask just as we do today.”

Though all of George’s films have left a significant impact on the cinematic landscape, the Living Dead series especially dives into the societal response to catastrophe, particularly the breakdown between the scientific community and an agitated populace. Additionally, his eerily accurate predictions have kicked off a new phrase on social media: #GeorgeRomeroWasRight. The mask also serves as a reminder that we should Stay Scared to Stay Healthy.

The George A. Romero Archive, now housed at the University of Pittsburgh as an integral part of its Horror Studies program, contains a shooting script from the 1974 film The Crazies, in which a small town is decimated by a rampant virus.

In June 2018, the George Romero bust was dedicated and installed at the Monroeville Mall. The GARF, a Pittsburgh-based non-profit organization dedicated to fostering George’s cinematic legacy and furthering independent film at local and global levels, was founded that same year.

July 16

Hello everybody,

Well, the time has come around…again.  July 16th. It will be forever... Sad.

It is a time for reflection. We are truly living in George’s head right now. Except without his wit! He also never really addresses how one pays the mortgage and make the car payments through all of this!

Then I think what would George be doing and what would he be thinking during these trying times. I don’t want to be presumptuous but I do have some good guesses.

First off, he would have been happy as a clambake! Obviously not for the deaths and sicknesses of course, but by the fact that he would be sequestered with no obligations, workwise and socially. He would want to eat well, play games well and he would write. He would have CNN on and it would be on 24/7, much to my chagrin!

In essence George was a political animal. He had strong feelings about Man’s struggles with both the challenges and the discourses.

What would he be writing about? It really could be about anything! He had such a diverse sensibility. Certainly though he would have been thinking about “the American situation.” George made a seminal film titled” Night of the Living Dead”, 52 long years ago and if you exchange the Ghouls metaphor for the SARS–CoV-2 not much has changed!  George referred to broad social problems in many of his works and the importance of cohesion, compromise and social evolution.

The current situation in the US resembles so closely to the famous line “ I am the boss up here, you be the boss down there!” I mean really. How did that turn out!

I made a promise to George that I would keep him posted on all things. I could not for a while because the cemetery was shuttered. I have since kept up my side of the bargain and he is very much up to date…I think he would be very disappointed but not surprised.

Yet, despite George’s half empty glass outlook (I am totally a glass half full kinda gal, together we had a full glass! How lucky I was and am, for having had him in my life!)

Here is to raising that glass. Thinking of George today. I think of him every day and wishing he were here with us to give us some guidance and missives.  I miss him.

I, by the way, tell him he is very missed by all of you too. Please, stay safe! Stay Scared!

The Amusement Park Is Coming Soon!

It’s Official! The Amusement Park Is Coming Soon!

From the Hollywood Reporter:

The 'Night of the Living Dead' creator's newly restored "lost" 1973 feature is being shopped at the Cannes Virtual Market.

Yellow Veil Pictures has picked up the worldwide sales rights to The Amusement Park, a newly-restored "lost" film by zombie movie pioneer George A. Romero.

The art house genre sales outfit will start shopping the 1973 feature at the Cannes virtual market this week. The Amusement Park, commissioned from Romero by the Lutheran Society, stars Lincoln Maazel as an elderly man who finds himself disoriented and increasingly isolated as the pains, tragedies, and humiliations of aging in America are illustrated by his journey among roller coasters and chaotic crowds.

State of the Union Address

Hello All!

The GARF is 16 months old today. Though we are still in our infancy I am very pleased with our accomplishments.

We have restored The Amusement Park and the determination of our path to show you this long forgotten film is ongoing. Romero completists, be patient. It's coming to get you! We have doled out some scholarships to young potential film makers as promised.
The George A. Romero collection is slowly being catalogued and the horror archive is growing.

We have still much to do!

We need to endow the Horror Studies Centre to the GEORGE A. ROMERO Horror Studies Centre and we still need to get the horror museum built!! (Why this still does not exist is frankly astonishing!!!)

The GARF's tentacles keep spreading and the word is out that we mean to make an impact on the horror genre!

I have a great devoted and passionate team but I still need more! I am seeking out volunteers. I know there are huge Romero fans out there that have skill sets that we desperately need. We need an entertainment lawyer, a foundation lawyer, a grant writer, a fund raiser and a candlestick maker!!!

Anyone out there? Please reach out...

Get Scared... Stay Scared!

Happy 80th Birthday, George

As you can imagine I am feeling very sad today. My best friend’s birthday !

On his last birthday I asked George what he wanted to do for his day...he said nothing ...definitely nothing big.. I said do you want to have dinner ? He said sure but not with anyone. Just low profile you know...Do you want to go out? Nah ....not really.....

..So do you wanna have dins at home? Yeah !...sounds good....

Oookay...

What do you want to eat? Ahhhhh...I’m thinkin .....pause... pause..I want to eat....Spam and caviar!

 Whaaat!

Oookay!

So that’s what G had for his last birthday dinner!

I had spam in the pantry and I bought a small can of caviar at the market...a few blintzy’s and sour cream..

He was in heaven....

yuk ! ....On the spam and (I am not a huge fan of caviar not that I don’t like it , it’s just not worth the money for my palette ) and whatever.... on the caviar.

I have no recollection on what I ate...

That was my George! High brow , low brow...

All I can say is he had a great night...I am glad!

Makes me smile..what a memory!
