The GARF’s 2024 Fundraiser: Igniting Creativity, Empowering Youth with Horror
Screams in a Box is an innovative collaboration between Film Camp in a Box and The George A. Romero Foundation (GARF) that sparks the imagination of young filmmakers. This thrilling program engages and excites the senses while teaching critical media literacy skills through the horror genre. It's more than just fun—it's about equipping the next generation with the tools to tell their own stories in a unique and impactful way.
Why Screams in a Box Matters: In a world saturated with media, young people must learn how to navigate, interpret, and create meaningful content. Screams in a Box empowers aspiring filmmakers to do just that. Each kit is delivered to the student's front door, providing everything they need to create their own horror film. Over 72 intense hours, students and their "film crew" will craft a script, shoot, and edit their movie, which is automatically entered into The Screams in a Box movie competition. But that's not all—the kit also includes seven hours of live, synchronous mentoring from a master filmmaker, guiding students through story development, cinematography, and editing techniques.
Expanding Our Vision: Currently, Screams in a Box is available only in Canada, but the demand and enthusiasm for this program have inspired us to bring this opportunity to young filmmakers across the United States. To achieve this, we need your help!
How You Can Help: By donating to The GARF, you are directly contributing to the expansion of Screams in a Box. Your support will help us reach more students, provide more resources, and continue to foster a love for filmmaking and media literacy in the next generation.
